Background

According to statistics, the global population of about 7.6 billion people consumes 245 million tons of plastic every year. Only about 14% of plastic packaging is recycled, and 1/3 of the packaging is not collected at all. About 80 percent of the plastic waste in the ocean comes from land, and it takes 450 years for that plastic to turn into particles.
